Telling the Region’s Story to the World: Euronews at Media City Qatar

More than 550 episodes produced from Doha, billions of broadcast impacts, and tens of millions of digital views later, Euronews’ presence in Qatar has become integral to its regional output.

That scale of production traces back to a decision made in 2021: to establish a permanent editorial hub at Media City Qatar.

Today, the Doha hub strengthens Euronews’ ability to cover Qatar, the GCC, and the wider region from within the region itself. Based at Media City Qatar, it contributes original news and current affairs content to Euronews’ global television and digital platforms, supporting its multilingual international output and allowing stories to be told with greater depth and context.

As Peter Barabas, Chief Content Officer – TV at Euronews explains: “Developing our news capability to cover Qatar from the ground has allowed us to tell stories directly from the region, expanding our scope beyond Europe to produce a much wider coverage of the inter-connected world. Being here gives us first-hand access and knowledge to stories with and from people who bring unique contributions from the region.”

Why Qatar Became Euronews’ Regional Base

Euronews’ decision to establish a base in Qatar was driven by a clear editorial rationale. The organization views Qatar as a fast-moving actor on the regional and global stage and made a strategic decision to be present in the country in order to better reflect its growing influence in international coverage.

“We see Qatar as a very fast-moving power broker in the region and around the world,” the team noted. “That is why we made the strategic decision to be present in Qatar and to tell what Qatar is doing because of its rising influence.”

From Doha, Euronews is building its capacity to cover Qatar closely and, from Qatar, to expand coverage across the wider region. The Doha hub also plays a connective role within Euronews’ broader editorial network, supporting stronger information flow across teams, including newer bureaus in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Azerbaijan.

The role of Media City Qatar

Euronews was among the first international media organizations to join Media City Qatar. From the outset, the relationship was shaped by accessibility, openness, and the quality of engagement.

As Euronews established its operations, Media City Qatar supported the process across legal setup, licensing, logistics, recruitment, and day-to-day operations. Media City Qatar also facilitated engagement with institutions such as Qatar News Agency and supported access to officials and major national events, helping Euronews integrate more deeply into the local media ecosystem.

“Time and access to Media City Qatar is the reason it is so successful. The door is always open, so it makes things easy.”

This working environment has allowed Euronews’ journalists and production teams to focus on delivering accurate, fact-based reporting, while benefiting from proximity to key developments and events shaping the region.

Building the newsroom through people

The growth of the Doha hub has been shaped by its people as much as its infrastructure.

Media City Qatar played a key role in supporting Euronews in identifying and recruiting journalists, technicians, and media professionals. The collaboration extended to recruitment, training, integration, and operational support across both news coverage and current affairs production. A key ambition has also been to recruit and integrate Qatari talent into Euronews’ global, multilingual newsroom.

The partnership has invested in future talent through two joint bootcamps delivered with Media City Qatar and Qatar University, aimed at supporting aspiring journalists and technicians and contributing to the next generation of media professionals in Qatar.

Content Growth and Editorial Expansion

The impact of Euronews’ presence at Media City Qatar is increasingly visible in output.

Since the start of the partnership in 2021, Media City Qatar and Euronews have co-produced five programs from Doha: The Exchange, Qatar 365, Scenes, Football Now, and The Dialogue. Together, these shows delivered 558 episodes, generating 11.3 billion TV impacts and 58 million views on YouTube, with audiences reaching 61 million viewers annually in their final year. This performance established a strong editorial and production foundation for the partnership.

Building on this momentum, Euronews has most recently launched two new programs from Doha: Qatar in Motion, Grand Voyager as well as developing the Cult and Focus programs. As a major milestone, Euronews has just set up and launched from Doha the Euronews Travel Channel, bringing together existing travel content alongside new programming.

The next milestone marks a significant evolution. Euronews is in the process of establishing its first 24/7 news desk operating from its offices at Media City Qatar: the first such operation for the channel in the Middle East.

A Relationship Built on Trust

From the earliest stages of establishing the Doha editorial hub, Media City Qatar has played an active, hands-on role in supporting Euronews across legal processes, licensing, recruitment, logistics, and operational setup. That support has extended into the editorial process itself, with close collaboration on content planning, production workflows, and field operations. The depth of experience and insight brought by the Media City Qatar team has been a decisive factor in shaping the programming produced from Doha.

As Euronews prepares to relocate fully to its new office within Media City Qatar, where its 24/7 newsroom will operate, the tone of the relationship remains consistent: openness, trust, and reliability.

“We are very thrilled we were one of the first companies under Media City Qatar and people are following us. We have honest conversations, which is why this is very successful.”

Together, Euronews’ journey illustrates how Media City Qatar provides an enabling environment for international media organizations to establish meaningful presence, operate responsibly, and grow sustainably while remaining closely connected to the local and regional context from which their stories emerge.
